Italy’s Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security has signed an agreement with Infratel Italia SpA, a subsidiary of Invitalia, to launch the SIM project — a new national technology system for environmental safety.

SIM will help improve flood and landslide prevention, climate change adaptation, emergency response, pollution monitoring, wildfire control, and precision agriculture by integrating data and expertise to guide public policy. Leonardo and DXC Technology are technology partners.

The €260 million program will fund 5,221 projects across Italy to protect communities from environmental risks. Investments include:

  • €54.5 million to upgrade the hydrometeorological network (4,129 sites)

  • €53.8 million for the radar network (30 sites)

  • €35.6 million for landslide monitoring (183 sites)

  • €26.3 million for the seismic network (356 sites)

  • €23.3 million for marine sensors and drones
